Sail to the Statue of Liberty, A gift given to America by another country

One of the most recognizable monuments in New York, The Statue of Liberty was actually given to America as a gift. A gift with a little bit of tinkering and an inflated price tag. Some would say that it is one of the country’s best historical monuments and is much loved by tourists.

The Statue was designed by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and was unveiled on October 28th, 1886 though it wasn’t completed until 1884. Bartholdi had first thought of the project whilst in Egypt and he was particularly inspired by the pyramids. He later teamed up with another Frenchmen, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel who was famous for the Eiffel Tower.

The U.S. needed funding for their statue, however, so they held a competition to see who would fund it and build it in America. People from around the world donated money to finally get it built where it stands today on Staten Island, New York City. The Statue itself cost $250,000 dollars and there were nearly 200,000 contributors worldwide.

The French government paid 90% of the costs while America only paid 10%. However, the French only had to pay $24,000 for the pedestal. Construction took about two and a half years for the statue before it was officially unveiled on October 28th, 1886 which made it well worth it.

The Statue of Liberty wasn’t seen as a gift at first. The Americans bought it outright but they didn’t even see it until several years later when they donated some of their own lands to use as part of a fundraising campaign in order to complete the statue.

In America, there are many other monuments built from donations from individuals. However, there is no other monument that has been given to a country as a gift by another country.
