One of the Most Excellent Art Gallery, the Louvre Museum in France | 20 Images

The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world. It houses many of the world’s most amazing and beautiful works of art. It includes paintings, statues, and more that have belonged to kings and queens in France as well as other places around Europe. The Louvre Museum is located in Paris, France on Avenue de Pyramides near La Tour de Montlhéry.

Founded on November 19th 1793 by Louis Vuitton during the French Revolution after being forced to leave his home due to concerns for his safety. The name of the museum was meant to be the “Musée des civilizations” meaning a museum for all civilisations. The museum took over several buildings in Paris such as the Palais du Louvre and Palais de la Découverte.

The Louvre Museum is home to many of the world’s most famous works of art like Michelangelo’s “David”, “Venus with Cupid”, and many others which can be found on display here. The collection is large but manageable due to the fact that it has been divided into various galleries.

The Louvre Museum is home to over 26,000 objects of art. This is an average of 7,000 works of art on display at any given time. The individual galleries are separated by several different factors such as period and location. The museum has a total of 28 galleries that revolve around the collection divided fairly equally by culture. Four of these galleries are located in the basement and include Asian art, Egyptian art and Roman art making up 3/5ths of the museum’s collection. Two more galleries include medieval art (1/5), Islamic arts (2/5) and Ancient Art including Greek, Roman, Etruscan and others (1/5). The remaining 8 galleries include the Middle Ages, Mona Lisa portrait gallery, Modern Art, temporary exhibitions and others. The one common factor found among all these galleries is that each has a distinct purpose for its location.

The Louvre Museum houses over 26,000 objects of art from over 5,000 cultures spanning 3 million years of history. These works of art show the progression and diversity of cultures in which humanity has existed since the beginning of recorded history. The most famous works of art in the Louvre Museum include ‘The Winged Victory of Samothrace’ (ca. 200 BC-AD 100), ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli (1486–1510), “The Musée des Antiquités Nationales” (1957) and others.

The museum consists of five buildings:

-Les Trois Grâces, a 17th-century mansion built for Madame de Pompadour, had been the residence of Louis XIV before his move to Versailles in 1670.

-In 1756, Louis XV acquired the Hôtel des Invalides, which was formerly a royal residence and military hospital. This building served as the museum’s administrative headquarters until 1931.

-The Musée du Louvre is the most famous of the museum’s four buildings and holds more than 25% of the French state collection. It houses mostly paintings, sculptures and archaeological objects. The Galerie d’Apollon is home to many ancient statues excavated in Egypt and Greece as well as art pieces from Medieval Europe.

-The Salle des Caryatides was designed for Marie de Médicis by Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1662 and 1667. It contains five caryatids, sculpted by Jean Guillaume Motte.

-The Cour Carrée is decorated with a series of famous bronze, stone and marble statues including the “Winged Victory of Samothrace”. It became the home to the Louvre Museum in 1882.

Considered one of the most beautiful museums in the world, it serves as a location for many occasions and exhibits from official state dinners to fashion shows. It also serves as home to many schools for artists and other organizations in Paris that lease portions of the museum for events. The best time to visit the Louvre museum is on Wednesdays at noon when admission is free. The museum was originally constructed using the “Encaustic” technique that allowed for construction without mortar. Glazed bricks were used in the construction of the building and held together by clay and lime putty. The painted brick shell is decorated with bands of iron-red tile, produced in Rouen after 1801, which are still very visible.
