Mount Rushmore; One of the Most Iconic Landmarks in United States

One of the most iconic landmarks in United States, Mt. Rushmore consists of four presidential faces carved into the granite stone. The national monument was created by Gutzon Borglum and Truman Andrews, as a tribute to all presidents who have served our country and what they stand for. The project took almost 20 years to complete, but it proved worth it when you see the sheer beauty of their work at one glance from the top. This beautifully carved out masterpiece depicts the strength, perseverance and bravery that each of these people possess within them on a daily basis.

Mt. Rushmore has been attracting tourists for many years now, every year hundreds of people from different countries visit the mountain and admire the monument, which is located in Keystone, South Dakota. The location of the mountain makes it very familiar to most people even if they have never been there before. The idea came to Truman Andrews after he visited Wyoming with his family. Truman was very impressed by the beauty of this place and could not get over it until he arrived back home. As a result, he decided to create something similar on top of Mt. Rushmore; an idea that eventually started his journey into creating one of the most iconic monuments in United States today.

The name of the mountain is given due to the four big heads carved on it. The faces are of four presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln who were known for their contribution to the development and growth of United States. The monument is so famous that people often mistake it for Mount Rushaway being unable to pronounce the name correctly.

The building was carved out by Gutzon Borglum and his assistant, Truman Andrew. They used dynamite for carving out the stone around them in order to be able to fit these huge figures into the mountain and make them look perfectly proportioned. According to records, they were able to fit 4 faces from head down on a face that measured 60feet long each. The faces were carved out by hand and by hand in a stone that was fractured to allow for the works. Many workers died as a result of the weather and poor health conditions, but no one dared to stop their work. They were so dedicated that many even passed away during the process of carving the monument out.

To make sure that tourists enjoyed their visit, Mount Rushmore was placed at the center of a museum on the mountain, which is open all year round to everyone. The museum features different interesting facts about each president along with historical information about them.
