SRI LANKA; The Most Popular Travel Destination

Sri Lanka is one of the best travel destinations among Asian countries for a long time. It is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, just off the southern coast of India. Its tropical climate, white beaches and palm-fringed coasts, rich cultural heritage, local food culture, art and architecture, festivals and sculptures are popular tourist attractions. Today, the island is a popular holiday destination, which is visited by tourists from all over the world.

Kandy Esala perahera is the most popular tourist attraction event in Sri Lanka which is held in August in Kandy every year. It is also known as the Festival of the Tooth and Sri Dalada Perahara. The perahera is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. The procession consists of colourful traditional local dances such as fire dance, whip-dance and more. The festival ends with the traditional Diya-kepeema ritual, a water cutting ceremony which is held at the Mahaweli River at Getambe, Kandy.

Sigiriya also one of the world’s wonders is an ancient rock fortress-palace built by King Kashyapa located near Dambulla town. Sigiriya was designated as a world heritage site in 1982 and is famous for its palace ruins on top of a massive 200 meter high (660 feet) rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures.
