There is a lot of misconception about fruit juice in the media, and from advertisements that are trying to sell you something. This blog post will give you the information that you need to know about fruit juice and what can happen if one has too much of it.
Fruit juice is a popular drink made from the juice of one or more fruit. Many fruits are naturally high in sugar, so fruit juice can be as sugary for you as soda, depending on what fruit you’re drinking and how much sugar it contains. And because of this, experts recommend not consuming too much fruit juice each day. Thatโs why many parents want to know which juices are good for kids and which ones should be avoided.
What is Fruit Juice?
Fruit juice is a smoothie-like beverage made by extracting the juices of fresh fruit, which may be blended with water or other liquids. The drink often contains sugar, but this amount varies depending on what type it is. Fruit drinks can be 100% squeezed juice (not processed), purees or syrups made from fresh fruit or canned concentrates(processed).
How Much is Too Much?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a maximum recommended daily intake of 100 milliliters of fruit juice. A half-cup contains approximately 70 ml. This means that most people will not get this much fruit juice in one serving, and as much as you can eat in a day is okay.
The problem with fruit juice is that if you drink too much, especially in excess of 100 ml, it can throw off your electrolyte balance and cause some serious health problems. Various adverse health outcomes have been associated with high-fruit juice intake; however, these are rarely due to the excessive amounts of fruit juice consumed.
What’s in it?
The most common ingredients are water, fruit juice from concentrate, citric acid, sodium benzoate (a preservative), natural flavor and artificial flavor. Fruit juice also contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium. You can find vitamin C in every fruit juice! The amount of calcium, vitamin A and vitamin C varies from one juice to the next. Juice that has pulp is sometimes called โnot from concentrateโ because the vitamins in the fruit are harder to get out of the pulp.
Why should I restrict my children’s juice intake?
Many parents believe that kids drink too much juice. Some experts even claim it could be a cause of tooth decay. Others say that the more fresh fruits and vegetables a child eats, the less juice he or she might need. Fruit juice is sweet and tastes good, but it doesnโt provide the same health benefits as fruits and vegetables without added sugar. Fruit juices do have some important nutrients, but they are not nearly as nutritious as the equivalent amount of fruit or vegetable pieces. So if you want to give your family a variety of healthy foods, you still need to buy them whole fruits and vegetables for snacks rather than juice.
